Waaah, We Don't Wanna See It

Surely I'm not he only one who has become overwhelmingly beaten by MMA fans' illogical protests. Of course, we all wish the UFC would do this, the athletic commissions would all that. The complaining that inevitably follows each article on the most well-known sites (that allow comments) is wearing me thin.

One clear example of the whininess I'm talking about is the on-going talk of Couture vs. Liddell IV. Being a hard-core MMA fan I can honestly tell you this fight does nothing for me. However, I understand why the UFC would want to put this fight on. People are saying they don't know why they have to fight again, we've already seen it, Randy's too old, Chuck's not the same, blah blah blah. But guess what, I don't think Dana White cares.

Here's the thing. The object of the UFC is simple; make money, grow the sport to make more money, and make even more money. How do you grow a sport? Easy, appeal to the casual fans. They don't make money off of those of us who read the articles, break down the fights, and watch every one we can because MMA is intriguing to us. No, the real money is in bringing in the fans who say, "Ooh, maybe there is more to it than just the stuff inside the ring/cage, let's follow the storylines and buy the gear."

Couture and Liddell are two of the sports' most recognizable names. They draw those casual fans who don't know the jiu jitsu genius of Demian Miai, have no idea who Eddie Bravo or Sean Tompkins are. The ones who didn't want to know how Ken Hahn came up with Frank Mir's game plan for Big Nog or try to understand the one-gear motor of Clay Guida. They need us, but they know they have us. They want to expand their reach, so they're shooting for those who will watch The Ultimate Fighter for the storylines, not to see who the next big thing might be.

It's going to happen people. I don't like it, we've seen it 3 times before. But there is no denying who brings in the money.

Hoooooly Cowww!

Oh man, there are fantastic things to come.

My goal
is to write articles that are both entertaining and informative to hardcore and casual fans alike. I personally am a hardcore fan who's only been following MMA for about 4 years, but being the obsessive compulsive person I am, I've studied the MMA fight game at length and feel like I have a lot to offer in the way of an unbiased opinion in many areas.

Also, since I'm looking to break into the field of journalism, I thought this would not only be a fun topic to write about but a productive one as well. Maybe one day you'll see me grace the pages of Sherdog or even ESPN.
